Classic Jazz in Grand Rapids

West Michigan Jazz Society and several Grand Rapids radio stations will present its 12th annual Classic Jazz Series this year. The lineup is very impressive.

Things kick off with Canadian pianist Oliver Jones and his trio at 7 p.m. on October 8. Apparently, rumors about his retirement were wide exaggerated! There will be a reception for Jones following the concert, including wine and a light supper, for an extra cost of $20 (call 616-458-0023).

On November 20 at 7:30, the T.S. Monk Septet from New York with arranger-trumpeter Don Sickler will come to Grand Rapids.

Next year, pianist Karrin Allyson will play with her trio on the 19th of February, Paul Keller and the Bird of Paradise Orchestra will go west on March 25, and trumpeter Wallace Roney will close the series with his quintet, featuring pianist Geri Allen, on April 14.

All concerts — except the one by Monk — will take place at the St. Celia Music Society, 24 Ransom SE, in Grand Rapids. Monk's concert will take place at the Ladies Literary Club, 61 Sheldon Blvd. SE. Please call 616-235-6285 for reservations. Season Tickets are available.
