New Owners at Baker's

BY LARS BJORN

At a bankruptcy court sale at the end of January, Baker's Keyboard Lounge ended up in the hands of Eric Whitaker and Hugh Smith. Whitaker is a retired General Motots executive and Smith has worked for two years as the night manager at the club. Former owner John Colbert declared bankruptcy in August of last year and many feared that this would be the end of the historic jazz club (opened in 1934) which Colbert had owned since 1996.

We wish the new owners good luck in maintaining one of the real treasures in the world of jazz. A peek at the schedule for March indicates few changes in programming so far. Friday and Saturday nights now have two shows (8:30 and 10:30) instead of one, and pianist Henry Gibson and veteran bassist Will Austin will lead a jam on Sunday nights. We can now heave a collective sigh of relief and start frequenting the reborn club at the corner of Eight Mile and Livernois.

Please consult our detailed schedule for more information.
