How to Ripen in Ice is a marvelous first collaboration between veteran improvisers Damon Smith and Piotr Michalowski. Taking their title from Henri Michaux’s Tent Posts, this live duo recording is, too, a masterclass in theoretical urgency. The duo ventures deep into diverse sonic terrain, moving decisively through a series of improvisations. The pair seamlessly transitions between immersive textural exaltations, percussive landscapes, and playful intertwining melodies.

Over the years, Smith has become well-known as a double bass virtuoso and expert in prepared bass and extended techniques. His stunning command is second only to his evident musicality. He listens attentively, leads effectively, and along with Michalowski conjures a series of inspired improvisations. On each track, Michalowski moves between woodwinds, ranging from saxophones to bass clarinet to Japanese shinobue flute, breathing new life into each improvisation with each instrument. Each of Michalowski’s improvisations are refreshingly unbounded by convention.

Together, Smith and Michalowski seem to have found new sympathetic duo partners. How to Ripen in Ice is a compelling document of a powerful pairing.
