Vincent York’s Jazzistry Annual “Rent Party”
Vincent York’s Jazzistry will present the annual “Rent Party” and celebrate Mardi Gras at the EMU Student Center, 900 Oakwood St., Ypsilanti, on Saturday, February 22, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
This beloved annual event raises funds for Vincent York’s Jazzistry, a non-profit organization dedicated to multi-cultural education through music — especially jazz. It is also the area’s best dance party with a dedicated dance floor in the ballroom of the Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center. Under the direction of saxophonist, flutist, and vocalist Vincent York, the band will have the dance floor packed with Mardi Gras grooves, New Orleans jazz classics for “Second Lining,” and more. In addition to York, the band will feature Vincent’s sister from Florida, Joan York, a very gifted and entertaining singer. Backing Vincent and Joan will be trumpeter Jauron Perry, trombonist and tuba-player Ron Kischuk, saxophonist and flutist Pete Kahn, pianist Rowan Tucker-Meyer, bassist Josef Deas and drummer Sean Dobbins. This party is one of the area’s major social events as winter begins to wane and jazz fans seek fun, food and great music for a great cause. It hearkens back to the days of Harlem “Rent Parties” with a joyous New Orleans twist.
There will be free parking, tasty treats of charcuterie platters, fruit and vegetable trays, and desserts with table service, a cash bar, door prizes and a unique silent auction. Proceeds from tickets, rent jar collections and the auction support Jazzistry’s nonprofit work educating kids and adults about the significance of jazz worldwide with a live touring show popular in local schools. Tickets are $75 each through A2tix.com. Tables for ten can be reserved for $650. Contact Jazzistry directly for table reservations without a processing fee.
