Bess
At Baker's
BY LARS BJORN
SEMJA
celebrated Detroit's piano treasure, Bess Bonnier, at Baker's on
November 16, with three of her former students performing: Jim David (below,
left), Duncan McMillan, and Scott Gwinell. Duncan had written "A
Song For Bess" for the event and like his fellow students, talked
extensively about the value of Bess' mentoring. He even lived in her basement
for about three years.
After an inspiring tribute by emcee Jim Gallert, Bess
treated us to three numbers backed by the house rhythm for the night:
bassist Dan Jordan and drummer Tom Brown. "I Remember Clifford"
was exquisite and "Giant Steps Boogie" was unique.
