Milt Jackson Memorial Jams Baker's

BY JIM GALLERT

Family, friends and admirers of the late vibraphonist Milt Jackson filled every available space at Baker's Keyboard Lounge on October 24. Alto saxophonist Phil Lasley led a sparkling quintet that included at different times vibes man Rob Pipho, tenor saxophonist Donald Walden and bassist Will Austin. As one would expect, tunes associated with Bags were liberally featured and the feeling in Baker's that Sunday afternoon was warm and swinging.  A special treat was bestowed upon the audience when Milt's elder brother Alvin, one of Detroit's primary bassists during the late forties and early fifties, made an appearance.

The place was still full when singer Joy Temple began her evening show at 8:00 p.m. Clarence Baker also spoke some heartfelt words about Milt Jackson, who played the club many times. All in all, it was a sincere tribute to the greatest vibraphonist in the history of modern jazz.
