Bass At Front of Edgefest

The bass is the theme of this year’s Edgefest at Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor, October 15–18. A number of the most prominent players on the instrument in the avant garde tradition will be present, such as William Parker, Mark Dresser, and Mark Helias. As always, William ParkerEdgefest will present players from all corners of the world from Detroit/Ann Arbor to Chicago, New York, California, France, and Norway. Edgefest has also drawn an audience from all over the United States for most of its eighteen years in existence.

It is hard to single out not-to-miss performances in this year’s schedule, but here are a few to pay special attention to: tenorist Michael Attias’ trio with the phenomenal drummer Tom Rainey at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday; Open Loose with tenorist Tony Malaby, Mark Helias, and Rainey at 9:30 on Thursday; the celebration of Eric Dolphy by a quintet with trumpeter Russ Johnson and pianist Myra Melford at 8:00 p.m. on Friday; and William Parker leading a seven-piece group including trombonist Steve Swell, tenorist Kidd Jordan, pianist Dave Burrell, and drummer Hamid Drake on Saturday at 7:00 and 10:00. A complete schedule can be found below.

In addition to the regular performances at the Concert House, Edgefest also features free public performances in a number of venues around Ann Arbor, starting with William Parker at Encore Records on Liberty on October 14 (8:00 p.m.). The Edgefest Parade is always a highpoint of the festival. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own instruments to the Concert House at noon on Saturday for the start of the parade through the Farmers’ Market area.

For ticket information, please go to Kerrytown Concert House's website. You can buy or reserve tickets for individual performances or edgepasses for all days.

SEMJA supports the educational activities of Edgefest: this year William Parker at Ann Arbor Scarlett Middle School and tenorist Tony Malaby and drummer Tom Rainey at Ann Arbor Community High.
