SEMJA Celebrates Ed Love at Baker's

The 2002 SEMJA Award will be given to Ed Love, Detroit’s No. 1 Jazz DJ for forty years. The award is given to individuals who have contributed significantly to the jazz life of Southeastern Michigan. To celebrate Love, SEMJA invites everyone to Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in Detroit on Sunday, October 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. for food, music, and an award presentation with Jim Gallert, Love’s former colleague at WDET, as m.c. Music will be provided by the Sean Dobbins/ Vincent Chandler Quintet (Urban Transport), winners of the Jazz Fest Star Quest at the 2002 Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival, until 4 p.m., after which a jam session will be held. Musicians who participate in the jam will be admitted at no cost; others will pay $10 at the door to cover costs of the food served and the music. Any surplus will go to SEMJA for its jazz education activities.

Ed Love has been a mainstay on the Detroit jazz radio scene since 1960. He has worked at many local stations, including WCHD, WJLB, WJZZ, and since 1983 has been part of public radio at Wayne State University in Detroit. His magnificent baritone voice can be heard on the “Ed Love Program” on WDET-FM (101.9) weeknights from 7 to 10 p.m. Love defines Detroit jazz radio and has brought many new listeners to jazz with the hard swinging mainstream bop that he favors. He also has developed magnificent jazz history programs for WDET, which were distributed nationally. In 2000 he served as the Director of the Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival and he has continued to play a role at the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival under its new leadership. The SEMJA award has previously gone to Myron Wahls, Ernie Rodgers, and Ursula Walker for their contributions to the jazz life of Southeastern Michigan.

Urban Transport is a group of young area musicians who most recently played the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz and the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festivals. The group is co-led by trombonist Vincent Chandler, drummer Sean Dobbins, and alto saxophonist Dean Moore.

Baker’s is located at 20510 Livernois, just south of the corner of Eight Mile Road. You can reach the club at 313-345-6300. Any questions about the event can also be directed to SEMJA at 734-662-8514.
