Tribute To Steve Richko
The celebration of the Paul Keller Trio Nat King Cole CD on October 8 turned into a tribute to pianist Steve Richko, who had passed away unexpectedly at 32 years of age earlier in the week. It was a heartwarming event led ably from the stage by bassist Keller, sharing many vivid recollections of the young pianist who, in his short career, already had established himself as one of the most brilliant pianists around these parts. It is fortunate that Keller has recorded much of his music on the PKO label.
The program for the concert largely featured songs from the We Like to Riff. A Toast To the Nat "King" Cole Trio. At the last minute, pianist Glenn Tucker took over Richko's role in the trio and did so magnificently, with aplomb and feeling. Guitarist Ralph Tope was part of the original trio and delivered several swinging solos during the evening. As relative youngsters, Tucker and Tope bode well for the continuation of mainstream jazz in this area.
Judie Cochill delivered a warmly received tribute when she sang Paul Keller's version of the standard "There Will Never Be Another You," reworded as "There Will Never Be Another Steve." Several members of the Richko family were at the concert and his cousin Ryan Rose sat in on drums to make the evening even more meaningful (see photo above).
The event was the first of a new series of SEMJA/Kerrytown Concert House collaborations and part of the KCH Club Series. SEMJA volunteers helped out with serving drinks and other tasks. We will continue this collaboration in the New Year.
