Rollins and Marsalis Headline 2012 Detroit Jazz FestivalThe 2012 Detroit Jazz Festival announced its lineup of national talent on April 17 at the Detroit Athletic Club. New artistic director Chris Collins seems to have put his stamp on the program with a long line of prominent instrumentalists (very few vocalists) firmly in the jazz tradition (including a few more adventurous names). On top of that list are no doubt tenorist Sonny Rollins (who will play opening night) and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis (with his quintet on Saturday), but many others also have name recognition in the world of jazz: Pat Metheny, Chick Corea (with Gary Burton), Wayne Shorter (and his quartet), Dave Douglas and Joe Lovano (Sound Prints), Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Fred Hersch, Donald Harrison, Ellery Eskelin, Jerry Gonzales, and Poncho Sanchez. A number of Detroiters who have made it in New York will also be on the bill, for example Louis Hayes, Curtis Fuller, Charles McPherson, Kenny Garrett, and Geri Allen. New Orleans born trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard is this year’s artist in residence and he will appear in an Art Blakey tribute band and with his own quartet. The festival will be held over Labor Day weekend at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius. One of the first warm-up acts for the festival will take place on May 4 at Orchestra Hall when Terence Blanchard and Sancho Panchez will join forces.
