Jackie Ryan and Sean Dobbins in Club Series

The month of May will feature two concerts in the SEMJA / KCH Club Series at Kerrytown Concert House. San Francisco based vocalist Jackie Ryan will perform on May 7 and our own Sean Dobbins will play with his Modern Jazz Messengers on May 21. SEMJA helps provide a club atmosphere by manning the bar for this series. The other club ingredient is a few tables close to the stage.

Club SeriesJackie Ryan's vocal talents have been praised by a long line of jazz greats, like Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans, and Barry Harris. Her 2007 CD You And The Night And The Music spent 34 weeks on top of Jazzweek's chart and includes drummer Jeff Hamilton and his long-time pianist Tamir Hendelman, both familiar to Ann Arbor listeners. Her newest CD Doozy has also done very well, staying on the charts for seven weeks. On May 7 she will be backed by a stellar trio with pianist Ellen Rowe, bassist Kurt Krahnke, and drummer Bill Higgins.

Sean Dobbins is one of the Detroit area's busiest drummers and has in recent years led his own bands. His Modern Jazz Messengers celebrate the hard bop sounds of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, one of the most exciting bands ever. The Modern Messengers are tenorist Diego Rivera, trombonist Vincent Chandler, pianist Roger Jones, and world renowned bassist Rodney Whitaker.

Coming up in the Club Series is the Planet D Nonet with Salim Washington on June 11.

All concerts start at 8:00 p.m. Please call the Concert House at 734-769-2999 for reservations.
