Tribute to Donald Walden at U-M
The University of Michigan’s Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation presented a tribute to their former professor Donald Walden on March 29, a week before the anniversary of his passing. It was a memorable evening of music by his colleagues and students, including Geri Allen, Ellen Rowe, Andrew Bishop, Ed Sarath, George Shirley (below) and Dennis Wilson.
The second half of the program featured Barry Harris, who was Walden’s mentor in Detroit in the fifties. Harris played a wonderful set with bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Karriem Riggins (top).
