Sonny Fortune at The Firefly

Altoist/flutist Sonny Fortune visited the Detroit area last month and played the Firefly in Ann Arbor on Saturday April 18. He was backed by Cliff Monear on piano, Kurt Krahnke on bass, and Sean Dobbins on drums. Dobbins had played with him the two previous nights as well (at Murphy’s and at the Detroit Groove Society) so by the time Saturday came around, Fortune and Dobbins were a radiant pair on stage. It was just not a matter of trading fours at the end of the tunes, but the intensity of Fortune’s alto against Dobbins’ polyrhythms. Krahnke and Monear were clearly on board of the fast moving train conducted by Fortune.
It was a pleasure to hear Fortune’s unique and searing sound on both instruments. His flute is not of the warm and mellow kind most players work towards, but he perfects a sharper and edgier approach. It was a memorable evening of music.
