Women In Jazz in Detroit and Ann Arbor

A “Women in Jazz” Workshop and Performance will take place at the Carr Center in Detroit on Saturday, March 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is free and open to the public, and students should bring their own instruments. The workshop is open to middle and high school students at all levels of performance. To participate, please register here.

The program is as follows:

  • 10:00 Icebreaker for students
  • 10:30 Women In Jazz Group, Introductions
  • 11:00 Masterclasses by instrument
  • Noon Jam Session
  • 12:45 Lunch / Discussion about challenges of being a woman in the field of jazz
  • 2:00 Performance by Women in Jazz Ensemble

The Women In Jazz Ensemble is led by pianist Ellen Rowe and bassist Marion Hayden (pictured right) and also includes trumpeter Ingrid Racine, trombonist Melissa Gardiner from New York (pictured above), and University of Michigan students Rachel Mazer on tenor sax, Nicole Patrick on drums, and vocalist Lauren Scales. SEMJA is providing financial support for the workshops at the Carr Center.
