Dave Sharp 7 Did N.O. and More

BY LARS BJORN

The Dave Sharp Secret 7 presented a New Orleans themed concert for the October 28 SEMJA/KCH Club Series concert at Kerrytown Concert House. The group definitely had their own take on the New Orleans tradition, ranging all the way from Louis Armstrong's "St James Infirmary" to the Meters' funk classic "Tippi Toes." The band had a lot of punch with Walter White's trumpet on top, strongly supported by Tony Bucelli's trombone. Chris Kaercher's funky tenor danced skillfully over the steady groove laid down by Sharp's(often electric) bass and the dynamite drumming of Eric "Chucho" Wilhelm. Too bad KCH does not have room for dancers when set up in a club format. Even without the opportunity to dance, the audience physically showed its appreciation of the Secret 7.

I was particularly impressed with the versatility of the band's repertoire and the uniformly high quality of the solos by Kaercher and White. It was a real pleasure to hear White hit the high notes in our backyard again, after several years in upstate New York. Dave Sharp is a multi-talented musician to watch in the future. Until his next gig, you can take a look at davesharp.com.
