Henry Grimes to Edgefest 05

One of the major figures on the free jazz scene in the 1960s, bassist Henry Grimes, will appear at this year's Edgefest in Ann Arbor. Grimes dropped off the scene in 1967 and his whereabouts were unknown for some time. A few years ago he returned to playing and has received more attention than ever. As a young man he played with jazz artists of all stripes, from Goodman, Mulligan, Monk, and Rollins, to Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler. Today he leads a trio with which he will perform at the Kerrytown Concert House on October 22. The Concert House will host the festival together with substantial help from the Firefly Club in downtown Ann Arbor.

The festival opens on Wednesday night, October 19, with Hubsch's Longrun Development of the Universe, a tuba/sax/trombone trio from Germany and the Netherlands. It includes the remarkable trombonist Wolter Wierbos, who has visited town as a member of Amsterdam's ICP Orchestra. Kevin Norton's Bauhaus Quartet is from NYC (not Germany) and includes the former Detroiter John Lindberg on bass who is a leading figure on the NYC downtown scene.

On Thursday KCH will feature the Black Earth Strings, a quartet led by Flutist Nicole Mitchell, one of the brightest new voices of the AACM in Chicago. At the Firefly the same night will be a 9-piece "indie rock goes chamber music" group made up of Ann Arbor and Detroit area artists called Bright Out: Chamber and NYC hybrid instrument designer/player Ken Butler.

On Friday night Nichole Mitchell returns to KCH as co-leader of a Chicago quartet with saxophonist Ed Wilkerson, who performed with his 8 Bold Souls at Edgefest a few years ago. The Firefly will feature the E3Q trio from Ann Arbor and as headliner for the evening, the FAB Trio. This trio features two major figures on the avant garde scene in the last three decades: drummer Barry Altschul and violinist Billy Bang.

On Saturday, October 22, The Sublingual Ensemble from Ann Arbor will perform at the KCH in the afternoon, and is followed by the Henry Grimes Trio in the early evening slot. The festival will end at the Firefly with Les Projectionnistes, a sextet from Montreal's musique actuelle scene, and Amsterdam's Tobias Delius Quartet. This group includes the amazing tenorist Delius, cellist Tristan Honsinger, and drummer Han Bennink. The latter two are important members of the ICP Orchestra. Bennink is widely considered the Dean of European avant garde drummers.
