Headliners at Ford Detroit 2001
he
Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival,
formerly Montreux-Detroit, will again be Southeastern Michigans
biggest jazz event of the year. It all takes place on Hart Plaza in downtown
Detroit on Labor Day weekend. This years festival has a number of
exciting artists, as can be seen in the complete schedule
below. This includes several nationally known acts and many of the best
musicians who have chosen to live around Detroit.
The headliners include two Detroiters who have gone
on to international renown from their new homes in New York: Tommy
Flanagan and James Carter. Flanagan is generally considered
the worlds foremost living exponent of bebop piano jazz and has
been a musicians musician since he arrived in the Big Apple in 1956.
He has played with everybody in jazz, including Charlie Parker and Ella
Fitzgerald. His trio is a marvel of sophisticated swing and should not
be missed when it performs at 10 pm on August 31st.
James Carter has been one of the hottest young saxophonists
in jazz since he toured with Wynton Marsalis in 1985 (he is a more adventurous
player than Marsalis). Carter will appear at the festival to showcase
two of his most recent projects: a band building on the legacy of Django
Reinhardt (Chasin the Gypsy, at 8:45 pm on September 1st) and his
Electric Project with a more contemporary sound (6:30 pm on Labor Day).
Carter masters a number of jazz traditions and with more gusto than anyone.
